Our Surf Progression System

Surfing feels magical the first time you ride a wave. It can also feel overwhelming when you're thinking about paddling, timing, balance, and the ocean all at once.

That's why we built a progression system that shows students exactly where they are, what they're learning, and what comes next. Every level builds confidence in the ocean, step by step.

Throughout the program, students progress at their own pace while unlocking achievement badges and celebrating milestones along the way.

Level 1: Whitewater Wizard

You're catching your first waves.

This is where almost everyone starts. Students learn how to paddle, stay safe in the ocean, and ride whitewater waves toward shore. Some students are still riding prone. Others are already trying their first pop-up.

The goal here is simple: get comfortable in the water and have fun.

You'll learn

  • Ocean safety basics
  • How to paddle
  • How to position yourself on the board
  • How to ride whitewater waves
  • First pop-up attempts

Typical waves

  • Small whitewater waves

Ready for Level 2 when you can

  • Ride waves toward shore
  • Control your board safely
  • Understand basic surf safety
  • Attempt a pop-up with confidence

Level 2: Green Wave Whiz

You're starting to surf standing up.

At this level, students begin standing up consistently and learning how waves actually break. Instructors still help select waves and give pushes, but students start developing timing, balance, and confidence.

This is usually where surfing starts becoming addictive.

You'll learn

  • Surfboard anatomy
  • Better paddling technique
  • Controlled pop-ups
  • Beginner wave selection
  • Whitewater and small green wave riding

Typical waves

  • Whitewater and occasional green waves up to 2.5 ft

Ready for Level 3 when you can

  • Stand up consistently
  • Ride waves with balance
  • Control your board safely
  • Recognize beginner-friendly waves

Level 3: Lineup Explorer

You're entering the real surf zone.

You and your instructor are out on the waves, both on separate boards. You are learning how to move through the lineup safely. Surf etiquette becomes a huge focus here.

Because nobody likes getting dropped in on by a kook.

You'll learn

  • How to paddle through shore break
  • How to catch green waves
  • Wave direction and positioning
  • Surf etiquette and priority
  • How to navigate the lineup safely

Typical waves

  • Green waves around 2–3 ft

Ready for Level 4 when you can

  • Paddle through smaller shore break
  • Catch green waves with guidance
  • Understand lineup etiquette
  • Surf safely around others

Level 4: Flow Rider

You're surfing with confidence and control.

Students at this level can usually choose their own waves and move through the lineup independently. This is where surfing starts feeling smooth instead of chaotic.

Turns begin. Speed generation begins. Style begins.

You'll learn

  • Independent wave selection
  • Riding down the line
  • Trimming and generating speed
  • Basic turns and maneuvers
  • Hardboard safety

Typical waves

  • Green waves around 3–4 ft

Ready for Level 5 when you can

  • Choose quality waves consistently
  • Navigate crowded lineups confidently
  • Ride down the line with control
  • Begin linking turns together

Level 5: Storm Chaser

You're becoming a confident surfer.

At this stage, students are surfing more powerful waves and learning advanced positioning, steeper takeoffs, and more technical maneuvers.

You've gone from surviving waves to reading them.

You'll learn

  • Advanced wave positioning
  • Steeper takeoffs
  • More advanced maneuvers
  • Surfing larger waves
  • Reading changing conditions
  • Introduction to barrel riding

Typical waves

  • 4–6 ft waves

Continued Progression

Students at this level keep refining style, positioning, timing, and ocean knowledge over time.

Because surfing never really ends. Even the best surfers are still learning.

Students can unlock digital achievement badges throughout their journey. Each badge comes with exclusive Brooklyn Surf Club swag and discount codes for future surf lessons.

Our Philosophy

Surfing teaches patience fast.

Some students move up quickly. Others spend more time building confidence at each level. Both are completely normal.

Our goal is to help every student:

  • Feel safe in the ocean
  • Build confidence step by step
  • Respect other surfers
  • Actually enjoy learning

Every surfer starts somewhere. Every wave teaches something.
